THE LAST PAPER MILL IN OCCITANIE STILL IN OPERATION

Brousses paper mill was built in the late 18th century on the banks of the Dure and at the heart of the Montagne Noire. Today, it is the last paper mill still operating in Occitanie.

It is now producing creations from the 7th generation of papermakers. They will show you this unique expertise that has been passed down from through the generations!

The paper mill is a member of the ‘Route des Métiers d’Art d’Occitanie’, has the ‘France Savoir-faire d’Excellence’, ‘Qualité Tourisme Occitanie Sud de France’ certifications and belongs to the ‘Entreprise & Découverte’ network, offering visitors the chance to get an all-round experience of the paper mill.

AN ATYPICAL GUIDED TOUR

On a fun and interactive tour, you’ll be able to uncover all the secrets behind making paper the traditional way. The passionate guides will immerse you in the history of paper and how it’s made, from the first paper-making machines to those used in the present day.

This mill uses traditional machines (Hollander beaters, pulp stones) and hydraulic motors (water wheel, turbine). Paper is made by hand using water and cellulose fibres: Cotton (rags), linen, hemp, extracted from horse dung, denim rags, grape stems, rice straw and so many other surprising plants! This variety results in a wide range of colours of paper, each one even more original than the last! The shape of the paper can be personalised: round, rectangular and even in a heart shape!

After the tour, you can create your own sheets of paper to take home with you. You’ll also have the chance to see some original and diverse works of art created using this paper.
