Bathed in light and freshness, this pretty village in the Montagne Noire could almost go unnoticed from the main Mazamet Carcassonne road. Caudebronde ‘la Discrète’ is delighted with its river and its beautifully laid-out schist stone… and it looks great too. From the ‘lauzières’ were extracted the raw material indispensable to construction. The ‘lauzerons’ took the stone from the quarry and gave it to the ‘lauzeur’ who laid it on the roofs.
Roofing with lauzes gave houses and sheepfolds a beautiful rustic look, kept them cool in summer and protected them from the cold in winter. This ancestral skill of the ‘lauzeur’ has now disappeared. All that remains along the paths are these strange stone hills, gleaming in the sunshine and sparkling after a rain shower. The village is charming. In summer, groves of hydrangeas embellish the renovated streets.
Attractive springs dot the village surroundings (Fontcouverte, La Félide near the playground…).
