Built on the banks of a river, the village of Les Ilhes-Cabardès once developed an economic fabric based around water. A mill crushed the harvested olives to extract a tasty mountain oil, while two factories used water from the Orbiel to make textiles and delainage. Between Les Ilhes-Cabardès and Fournes-Cabardès, relive a truly ancestral route along the hillsides, under the discreet eye of the sentinels of the four Lastours châteaux. Here, for centuries, men and women have worked the land with their hands, stone by stone, to live and sometimes survive.
Fournes-Cabardès is a village on a plateau whose vocation has long been exclusively pastoral: dolmen, menhirs and cup stones bear witness to the presence of man on this land since the Neolithic period. A beautiful Mediterranean walk in the heart of a wild and authentic environment!
